MediaCorp okto is a television channel in Bestway Building, Singapore, managed by MediaCorp TV12, which was officially launched on 20 October 2008 hence replacing the SPH MediaWorks Channel i was network form SPH MediaWorks, Kids Central and Arts Central was network form Central brands as oktoDAY and oktoNITE respectively. With the increased amount of broadcast time, the channel broadens the scope of Kids Central and Arts Central by offering more content for its viewers form Central. okto resembles Premiere 12 (managed by MediaCorp TV12) which became defunct in 30 January 2000 and SPH MediaWorks Channel i (managed by SPH MediaWorks) which also became defunct on 1 January 2005.

The word "okto" means "8" in Greek. To reflect this, both StarHub TV and SingTel mio TV carry this channel as Channel "8" (this channel shouldn't be confused with MediaCorp Channel 8, which is MediaCorp's main Mandarin language channel). Despite the meaning of the channel's name, the channel is actually airing on channel 30 for those receiving channels via aerial or channel 25 for those using StarHub TV sockets. For those who subscribed to StarHub TV the channel will be aired on channel 108 and mio TV the channel will be aired on channel 08.

Okto has a mascot named Ollie whom was originally named OktoBoy, drawn on his back is the logo of Okto and born this year (2011).

History

Singapore Broadcasting Corporation

MediaCorp TV12 was launched on 31 January 1984 as Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).

Television Corporation of Singapore

On 1 January 1994 as Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) replaced SBC-5, was former names Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), Malay programmes were transferred to Prime 12, previously aired on Channel 5.

Singapore Television Twelve

On 27 September 1995 as Channel 5 and Channel 8 began 24-hour transmission, while Malay and Tamil programmes, previously aired on Channel 5 and Channel 8, respectively, were moved to Channel 12 as the Prime 12 (later Suria) and Premiere 12 (later Vasantham) programming belts. On 31 January 1994 as Singapore Television Twelve (STV12) replaced SBC-12, was former names Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) ia a new look network stations owner by Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS).

Singapore International Media

SBC was fully privatised in 1 October 1994 and split into 3 individual companies under the SIM Group of Companies based parent by Singapore International Media (SIM) has : Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) took over the television broadcasting arm of Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), Radio Corporation of Singapore (RCS) took over thr radio broadcasting arm of Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) while Singapore Television Twelve (STV12) operated Channel 12 manager by Prime 12 and Premiere 12 their second satellite television broadcasting and radio broadcasting transmit receive earth station on Caldecott Broadcast Centre based in Singapore International Foundation regional broadcast venture Singapore International Television (SITV) and Radio Singapore International (RSI).

Central and Suria

In 1999, the Singapore Internationam Media (SIM) restructuring exercise Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) became one of its Strategic Business Units (SBU). Singapore Television Twelve underwent an entire makeover was re-launched on 30 January 2000, MediaCorp TV12 Suria is a new Malay language channel with programming similar to MediaCorp TV Channel 5 channel replaced Prime 12 as a channel for the entertainment needs of the Malay community, while Premiere 12 became MediaCorp TV12 Central is a television channel separated into 3 sections according to the time slot given at different part of a day as

Previously, Tamil language programming was broadcasted together with Malay languages programming in Prime 12 while Premiere 12 is a English language consists of Arts, Documentary and Kids programming. The STV12 channels did not commence 24 hour transmissions, despite rumours, while Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) such as : MediaCorp TV Channel 5 and MediaCorp TV Channel 8 continued their 24-hour transmission with significant reform to their programming for late evenings. SportCity, is a television channel dedicated to sport programmes, was introduced by Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) in 30 January 2000 and subsequently renamed CityTV in May 2001 and introducing programmes catering to a larger range of audience, before being shut down in January 2002 due to economic recession and a lack of viewership.

SPH MediaWorks Channel i

In 20 May 2001, SPH MediaWorks Channel i launched as SPH MediaWorks TVWorks. In New Year's Day on 2005, this channel was inactive because the operator, SPH MediaWorks merged with MediaCorp TV MediaCorp TV12 and MediaCorp News.

okto and Vasantham

The idea of a new channel came in 1 January 2008 when the Parliament of Singapore decided to expand the Tamil language Vasantham Central into a standalone Tamil language channel. The result was a split of the Central channel where Kids Central, Arts Central and SPH MediaWorks Channel i became okto on the same frequency as the old SPH MediaWorks Channel i while Vasantham Central was also replaced by Vasantham still on the same frequency as the old Central channel. It also show Kids movies (OKTO@MOVIES) on primetime Fridays & Saturdays and it also showing the live television broadcasting delayed relay simulcast coverage multi national and international sports event such as Summer Olympic Games, Winter Olympic Games, Summer Paralympic Games, Winter Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, Asian Youth Games, Youth Olympic Games and more from 7:00 pm to 12:00 midnight.

On 20 October 2008, Kids Central and Arts Central was merged to form MediaCorp TV12 okto while Vasantham Central became a full-fledged channel as MediaCorp TV12 Vasantham occupying the original MediaCorp TV12 Central channel and effectively making the channel defunct.

Programming

Okto is predominantly an English channel with selected programmes in the language of the country of origin. The programming on the channel is similar to Kids Central, Arts Central and SPH MediaWorks Channel i, with preschool and children programms in the day and documentaries; lifestyle,news,current affairs, anime and art performances in the night.

Okto aims to be a one-stop channel that will enrich, engage and entertain, offering some of the best local and international programmes to the Singapore viewers. The channel has a special focus on the kids and arts communities and on User Generated Content (UGC) enabling them to participate, grow and be an integral part of the channel.

oktoDAY

oktoDAY replaces Kids Central and generally has kids programmes.

New programming

On 1 April 2011, the programming on okto was revamped. The channel is no longer divided into oktoday and oktonite. Instead, it is divided into okto and a~ok (Arts on Okto). However, the transition clip to oktonite (where the background changes from white to blue) is still played.
